Abstract

The folktale of Heer and Ranjha had been undeniably the most favorite anecdote of the Punjab. There had been a long debate whether the characters and chronicles of the tale are factual or just a piece of fiction? Many a scholars are of the view that this romance reached the Punjab with the Greeks and turned into a local story with the passage of time. In the following article an effort has been made to establish the view that all the characters and events are purely indigenous and nothing has been imported. The resemblance of name of the Heer and Hera, the Greek goddess, is just a coincidence. To reinforce the viewpoint, the institution of Yoga and character of buffalo in Punjabi literature and culture has been discussed.
