Abstract

Ibrahim Jalees’s reportage, titled “Shehar”, was first published in 1944 in the Bombay-based monthly litrarry journal Nizam. But was first brought to scholarly attention through Dr. Anwar Sadeed’s book “Urdu Adab ki Mukhtasar Tareekh”, despite having remained largely unnoticed by critics earlier. According to Dr. Anwar Sadeed, “Shehar” presents a coherent sociological situation in which individual experience and collective urban reality are intricately woven together. One of the distinctive strengths of this reportage lies in its emphasis on the impression of personality, along with a conscious rejection of purely internalized or detached external observation. The present article examines “Shehar” in the light of Dr. Anwar Sadeed’s critical viewpoint and analytical framework, focusing particularly on questions of presence, textual identity, and genre-consciousness.
