Abstract

"Mata-e-Faqeer" is the autobiography of Sardar Muhammad Chaudhry, former Inspector General of Police, Punjab. He has written it with great honesty and sincerity. Despite having served on some of the highest posts in the bureaucracy, he never forgot his past. In this autobiography, the author has narrated the story of his life in simple yet beautiful language, which clearly shows his mastery over the art of writing. His style reflects that he is a truthful and straightforward person. Then he explains how they reached Lahore and later migrated to Toba Tek Singh. Due to the lack of employment opportunities there, his father began a modest job. The author details how his education continued — how he stood first in the matriculation examination in the district of Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), then moved to Lahore for higher studies, and how he gained admission to Government College Lahore. He also mentions his companions and peers in Lahore, his preparation for the competitive examination, and how he did not lose courage after his initial failure. Eventually, he passed the CSS exam and joined the Police Service. After completing his training in East Pakistan, he began his professional career in Abbottabad. During this time, he mentions that his marriage was arranged with Bilqis, and he describes how their married life went on. The death of Bilqis had a deep impact on him, and the later events of his life are also included in this autobiography.
