Idioms and Allusions in the Urdu Poetry of Ibrahim Zauq

Abstract

Sheikh Ibrahim Zauq was among the eminent poets of the Delhi School, who refined the genres of qasida and ghazal with fascinating idiomatic expressions, simultaneous everyday language, and well-placed Persian compounds. The present study examines the stylistic and linguistic use of idiomatic constructions (attractive compounds) and allusions (references and symbolic narratives) in Zauq’s poetry. For this purpose, Kulliyat e-Zauq, Intikhab-e-Kalam-e-Zauq, Aab-e-Hayat, and other reliable literary texts have been used as primary sources. This research reveals that Zauq, through (1) Arabic and Persian genitive constructions, (2) Delhi idioms and phrases, (3) simile- and metaphor-based compositions, and (4) allusions drawn from religious traditions and classical narratives, amassed a wealth of meanings within his ghazals and qasidas. Consequently, his poetry, marked by linguistic purity, structural accuracy, and the ease of everyday expression, remains closely connected to the esteemed tradition of the “Khaqani of India”. This study paves the way for further exploration of the intertextual connections in Zauq’s allusions and the linguistic features of the Delhi School.
