Abstract
Phonetics deals with speech sounds while phonology concerns with different patterns of sounds within a language or among different languages. This article deals with the research and critical study of English sources of modern Urdu phonetics and phonology. It is evident that modern Urdu phonetics and phonology are influenced by their respective fields of modern English linguistics. Those English sources of modern Urdu phonetics and phonology have been discussed in this article. Besides other general English linguistic sources, some major English sources of modern Urdu phonetics and phonology are “An Outline of English Phonetics” (1914) and “The Phoneme: its Nature and Use” (1949) by Daniel Jones, whereas, “Phonetics” (1943) and “Phonemics” (1947) by Kenneth Lee Pike. These English sources have been selected with special reference to “Sautyat Aur Phonemiyat” (1994) by Iqtidar Husain Khan.
