Abstract
Amrita Pritam was a prominent famous poetess of Punjabi language and literature. She had a great affection for Punjab, the culture of Punjab and women of Punjab. Amrita Pritam has closely observed the life of a Punjabi woman and revealed artistically the miseries, thoughts, role, problems, character of a women living and facing life and its different shades in the rural area of Punjab. Her famous poem written under the title “Aj Aakhan Waris Shah Noo” is voice of a Punjabi woman. Her poetry also reflects different cultural, social and other colors of Punjab. The values, habits, culture, atmosphere, relationships and psyche of people living in Punjab are obviously different from other regions of Indo Pak. The poetry of Amrita Pritam portrays all the above mentioned aspects and colors of Punjab. These aspects and colors have great influence on the life of people living there. Amrita Pritam, as a sensitive poetess has viewed the partition of Punjab in an emotional context. She has portrayed division of Punjab as a division of body and soul and the same is evident from her poetic work. The main topics of her poetry were love, freedom, justice and togetherness. Amrita can be termed as the first modern poetess of Punjabi literature and language. In my article, I have tried to explain the influence of Punjab on poetry of Amrita, her relationship with Punjabi culture and values and her views on these issues as a Punjabi poet and Punjab loving person.
