Abstract

Bang e Dara is the first poetry collection by Iqbal. In it the abundance of thoughts and meanings justifies several interpretations. Professor Yusuf Saleem Chishti holds a distinguished position among the interpreters of Bang e Dara. After his interpretation of Bang e Dara nine more have been added. Among the later interpreters, Dr Shafique Ahmad is quite significant. His Sharha e Bang e Dara, even though it is a bit conventional, it still has distinct qualities. He has not given deliberate meanings to Iqbal, rather he has seen Iqbal in his own context. He has given the years of almost all the poems. He has thrown light on the background of most of the poems. He has also pointed out to the changes made in the poems. He also explains the difficult words and phrases, and allusions in the verses. He fulfills all the possible requirements for the interpretation of verse. Dr Shafique Ahmad has preferred conciseness to detailed explanation. His style is quite organized, reasonable and balanced. The present study is an effort to analyze this important interpretation.
