Abstract

India has for centuries been a center of diverse languages, cultures, and civilizational traditions. The cultural diversity and linguistic plurality of this region have endowed social life with a unique identity. Cultural change occurs gradually and, passing from one generation to another, becomes a part of the collective consciousness. In this context, the sketch writing of Naiyer Masud emerges as an important medium for preserving this cultural continuity and its evolution. In his sketches, one finds not only portrayals of personalities or places but also a vivid depiction of the cultural, social, and intellectual conditions of his time. Viewed in this perspective, Naiyer Masud’s collection of sketches Adabistan occupies a prominent place in the tradition of Urdu sketch writing. These sketches are not merely character portrayals; they also artistically present the cultural and social atmosphere of the author’s era. In Naiyer Masud’s writings, elements such as natural wit, warmth, subtle humor, and liveliness appear as distinctive features, making his style engaging and impactful. Thus, Adabistan not only highlights the aesthetic values of Urdu sketch writing but also, through its rich cultural context, vivid imagery, and eloquent expression, emerges as an important milestone in Urdu literature.
