Abstract

This article contains the definition of Marsiya (ELEGY) , shows difference between traditional Marsiya (ELEGY) and modern Urdu Marsiya (ELEGY) and tradition of Marsiya Nigari in Bahawalpur.

History of Marsiya (ELEGY) writing in Bahawalpur shows leading elegists such as Agha Sikandar Mehdi, Nafees Fatehpuri, Gulzar Nadim Sabri, Masood Hassan Shahab etc. Habib Muhammad Habib is one of those renowned elegists who excelled and perfected the art of elegy/Marsiya writing in Bahawalpur. He is the leading exponent of modern Marsiya nigari in Bahawalpur. He composed as easily as he spoke, observing all contents of Marsiya. Among his contemporary elegists, his individuality is the obvious truth.
