Abstract

The way Dante in Italian literature and Ezra Pond in English literature enriched canto writing, just as that Syed Hadi Hassan and N.M. Rashid though added significantly in the convention of canto writing but Capt. Jafar Tahir owes much to lead this genre to an apogee in Urdu. Cantos were basically the songs sung in church. We find many songs in Bible too. "Bhajan" in Hinduism also relates to this group. It is, as if, cantos originate from the convergence of music and poetry. The brrilliance of Jafar Tahir is that he introduced as much dimensions of cantos writing that this genre has become his identity in Urdu literature. The following thesis is an attempt to circumscribe the canto writing of Jafar Tahir.
